Fluorite – Non-U.S. Locations

These are specimens in my collection for reference purposes, not for sale. Except for fluorite from Ontario, Canada which I collected, the rest were obtained through trades or at shows. The price of choice collector’s fluorite has risen from reasonable to ridiculous. The green fluorite from Madagascar I bought from a dealer in Tucson in 2024 was just about the only reasonably priced fluorite I saw there.

Australia

Australia is not famous for fluorite but has occurrences throughout the continent.

Fluorite with siderite from Mt. Bischoff, Tasmania, Australia

Canada

Canada has many well-known fluorite deposits. And some that are not famous for a good reason. They aren’t fantastic specimens.

China

This is the leading country for fluorite in many colors and with many matrices / associations like quartz and other minerals. Specimens used to be inexpensive. Not so, today.

Madagascar

One of the new major producers of fluorite today. That poor island is being mined for just about everything. Green seems to be the most common color of fluorite from that country.

Namibia

Namibia and South Africa a prolific fluorite producers.

South Africa

South Africa is a major producer of fluorite although the largest deposits aren’t known for crystals. Some handsome specimens are found at various locations.

Sweden

Not a well-known source of fluorite, there are many mines where it has been found.

United Kingdom

Fluorite was named for its fluoresce noted from many locations in Co. Durham, England. It occurs in many colors and sizes. Today, the Rogerly Mine is one of the best known, but there are other deposits in the region producing beautiful specimens.
